In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala, the Lord of the worlds, for His blessings, guidance, and mercy that have enabled us to gather for the 4th International Conference on Language, Literature, and Their Teaching (ICoLLiT 2025). Peace and blessings be upon our noble Prophet Muhammad Shallallahu ‘Alaihi Wasallam, his family, his companions, and all those who
follow his guidance until the end of time.

It is with great honor and profound gratitude that I welcome you to ICoLLiT 2025, held on 12 June 2025 in a hybrid format, both via Zoom and in-person at the Siti Walidah Building, Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta. Bringing together scholars, educators, researchers, and practitioners from around the world, this year's conference is centered on the theme "Revitalizing Literacy Culture", inviting meaningful reflection on the evolving role of literacy in contemporary society. In our time, literacy has moved beyond the traditional skills of reading, writing, and arithmetic. It now encompasses the ability to interpret, create, and communicate across languages, images, numeracy, digital media, and cultural symbols. This broadened understanding of literacy empowers individuals to make informed decisions, think critically, and participate actively in cultural and civic life. ICoLLiT 2025 provides an interdisciplinary platform for sharing insights, advancing research, and fostering innovations that support these ideals.

We are honored to welcome distinguished keynote speakers: Prof. Dr. Marian Klamer of Leiden University, whose expertise in linguistic anthropology will offer deep cultural perspectives; Dr. Ganjar Harimansyah, S.S., M.Hum. from the Ministry of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia, with extensive experience in language and literary development; Prof. Dr. Harun Joko Prayitno, M.Hum. of Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta; and Dr. Misita Anwar of Monash University, each contributing unique scholarly and pedagogical insights. The conference addresses diverse topics, including innovative pedagogy for the VUCA era; revitalizing local wisdom in language education; integrating artificial intelligence into learning; developing multimodal literacy; preserving local languages; and promoting Indonesian classical literature in the digital age. These discussions are vital in navigating an era of rapid change while safeguarding our cultural heritage.

On behalf of the organizing committee, I extend heartfelt appreciation to all participants, presenters, reviewers, and institutional partners. May Allah SWT bless our endeavors, guide our steps, and make ICoLLiT 2025 a meaningful milestone in fostering a literacy culture that is rooted in values, open to innovation, and beneficial to all.
Yunus Sulistyono

https://proceedings.ums.ac.id/icollit/article/view/6000

This study explores the integration of Javanese legends into the English for Tour Guiding Services course at Universitas Surakarta, focusing on three key objectives: enhancing students' cultural literacy, improving their English-speaking proficiency, and identifying the challenges and opportunities in incorporating local wisdom into English for Specific Purposes (ESP) instruction. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach, the study involved 25 students and utilized classroom observations, interviews, and document analysis. The instructional method centered on oral storytelling, allowing students to retell culturally embedded narratives in English. Findings indicate that students showed greater awareness of local heritage, alongside notable improvements in fluency, coherence, pronunciation, and confidence. Storytelling rooted in familiar cultural contexts also fostered identity formation and audience engagement. Despite challenges such as the lack of English-language sources and the complexity of cultural translation, students and lecturers responded with collaborative adaptations, digital storytelling tools, and custom-designed learning modules. These strategies not only addressed pedagogical limitations but also promoted student creativity and digital literacy. This research highlights the dual function of local narratives in ESP-supporting linguistic competence while revitalizing cultural heritage-and offers a model for culturally grounded tourism education.
Budi PurnomoNunun Tri Widarwati

https://proceedings.ums.ac.id/icollit/article/view/6002

Sociolinguistics provides knowledge about how to use language, including guidelines for communication by using language, language varieties or language styles used when interacting. Language variations in society can occur due to external influences of language or in other words non-linguistic factors. In terms of speakers, there are 4 language variations, namely idiolect, dialect, chronolect, sociolect. Language variations have similarities in terms of sound system, form system, word system, sentence system and meaning system. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method with data sources in the form of a comment column on the TikTok account @rafaell_1616. The data studied are in the form of words, phrases, and sentences containing language variations. Data collection techniques are carried out through listening, recording, and documentation. Data analysis uses an interactive analysis model, including data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. This study focuses on language variations in terms of speakers, which consist of sociolects, idiolects, dialects, and chronolects. Sociolect includes variations of language used by certain groups in society based on social status, such as the use of acrolect (informal language that is popular among the younger generation in big cities), vulgarity (coarse or impolite language), and slang (colloquial language that is temporal in nature).
Fikriyyah LuthfiatuzzahraM MarkhamahDini Restiyanti Pratiwi

https://proceedings.ums.ac.id/icollit/article/view/6007

This study aims to describe the personality structure of the main character in the short story "Mimpi Dini Hari" by Sumarno Sukowati using a literary psychology approach based on Sigmund Freud's psychoanalysis theory, which includes id, ego, and superego and describes its relation to the cultivation of wisdom values in literature learning. The main character, Toni, is described as a figure dominated by id, with a weak ego and suppressed superego, resulting in complex inner conflicts. This research is a descriptive qualitative research. Data collection is done by reading markings. Data analysis in this research uses close reading technique. The results of the analysis show that Toni experiences a personality crisis due to the domination of uncontrolled desire and ambition, which ultimately has a moral and spiritual impact on himself and the surrounding environment. The symbolic dream in the short story is a reflection of the inner struggle as well as a rebuke from the inner voice that has been ignored. In addition to analyzing the psychological aspects, this article also describes the importance of wisdom values in literature learning. Understanding the characters' inner conflicts becomes an educational tool to instill wisdom, empathy, and ethical awareness to readers or students. Thus, literature is not only an object of aesthetic study, but also a medium for reflection and meaningful life learning.
Nurlita CahyaniAli Imron Al Maruf

https://proceedings.ums.ac.id/icollit/article/view/6012

Punctuation plays a pivotal role in written communication, especially in educational contexts. However, its misuse in instructional materials remains a significant issue. The main objective of this study was to identify and examine the forms of punctuation errors in Indonesian language textbooks at the high school level. The approach used was descriptive qualitative by applying observation techniques and recording the contents of the text in the textbooks. The results of the analysis showed that there were various significant punctuation errors, such as errors in the use of periods, commas, colons, hyphens, and quotation marks. These errors were caused by a lack of understanding of the rules of the General Guidelines for Indonesian Spelling (PUEBI) by both the authors and users of the book. As a result, students' understanding of the subject matter was disrupted, and there was a risk of ambiguity and misinterpretation in the learning process. These findings indicate the need to improve the quality of the preparation of teaching materials and strengthen students' mastery of writing grammar so that the use of punctuation in learning Indonesian becomes more appropriate and effective. This study is expected to be a reference for improving teaching materials and language learning strategies at the high school level. These findings imply the urgent need for comprehensive editing processes and the integration of punctuation instruction into teacher training programs.
Soufia Falupi WidhianingsihDian Novita SariM Markhamah

2025-08-112025-08-11189197Language Errors in Pragmatic Scientific Articles by PBSI Students
https://proceedings.ums.ac.id/icollit/article/view/6016

Writing scientific articles is an important skill that must be mastered by students, especially in the Indonesian Language and Literature Education Study Program (PBSI). However, there are still many obstacles found, especially related to the use of inappropriate language. This study aims to analyze language errors in scientific articles on pragmatics written by PBSI students, focusing on spelling, syntax, and semantic errors. The method used is descriptive qualitative with data collection techniques in the form of documentation studies of students' scientific articles. The results of the analysis show that spelling errors are still the main problem, including the writing of basic words and affixes, the use of capital letters, writing numbers, pronouns, loan words, and the use of punctuation and italics that are not in accordance with the General Guidelines for Indonesian Spelling (PUEBI). In addition, many syntactic errors are also found, such as unnecessary repetition of words, incomplete phrases, incorrect use of prepositions, and ineffective sentences that do not fulfill the subject-predicate elements completely. Semantic errors also appear, in the form of inappropriate word choices that reduce the clarity of meaning and interfere with the reader's understanding. These errors have an impact on the clarity and professionalism of scientific articles and hinder effective academic communication. The main factors causing this are students' lack of understanding of linguistic rules and lack of accuracy in writing. Therefore, more intensive learning and guidance are needed so that students are able to apply the rules of spelling, syntax, and semantics of the Indonesian language correctly. This study is expected to be a reference for improving the quality of scientific writing of PBSI students according to academic standards.
Bella Eka WardhayaniErisa Ridha SarastiwiAisya AlmaasM Markhamah

Data were collected through purposive sampling and categorized into four types of errors: spelling, diction, syntax, and semantics. The results show that there are 23 language errors, consisting of 10 spelling errors, 5 diction errors, 6 syntax errors, and 2 semantic errors. The dominant spelling errors are capitalization that does not comply with PUEBI, while diction and semantic errors reflect inappropriate word choice and misleading meaning. Syntax errors include ineffective and non-parallel sentence structures. These findings indicate that errors in textbooks directly impact students' understanding and attitudes toward the text. Therefore, a comprehensive revision is necessary to ensure that textbooks comply with language standards and pedagogical objectives.
Eldina NurdianaElma Anggun SalzabilaHasna Hanifa HaryantoM Markhamah

https://proceedings.ums.ac.id/icollit/article/view/6022

This article examines the politics of memory and identity in contemporary Indonesian literature through a narrative analysis of Cantik itu Luka by Eka Kurniawan. The novel represents traumatic events erased from the official state memory, such as colonialism, the 1965 massacres, and cultural repression during the New Order era. By blending the aesthetics of magical realism with local mythological elements, Kurniawan constructs an alternative narrative that challenges hegemonic historiography and gives voice to subaltern perspectives. This study employs a qualitative approach through literary discourse analysis, integrating postcolonial theory, memory studies, and historiographic metafiction. Data were collected through close reading of narrative elements that represent collective violence, hybrid identity, and female agency. The findings indicate that Beauty Is a Wound not only conveys social critique but also functions as a cultural archive that articulates marginalized collective memory. This research contributes to Indonesian literary studies by positioning fiction as an ideological space capable of challenging dominant structures of representation and reconstructing history from critical and plural perspectives.
Eli Marlina HarahapAli Imron Al MarufAbdulkarim Duerawee

Language plays an important role in communication, especially in the delivery of information through online news media which is now the main source of public information. However, the speed of news production in the digital era often causes various linguistic errors, especially in spelling aspects such as the use of punctuation and letters. This study aims to map the types of spelling errors that appear in the March 2025 edition of Channel News online news, analyze the factors that cause them, and provide recommendations for improvement. The research method used is descriptive qualitative with data collection techniques in the form of reading and recording techniques on three news titles. The results show that the most dominant errors include the use of comma and period punctuation marks, capitalization, as well as the writing of absorption words and abbreviations. These errors are generally caused by the writer's lack of understanding of the rules of Enhanced Indonesian Spelling (EYD) or the General Guidelines for Indonesian Spelling (PUEBI), as well as time pressure in the editing process. https://proceedings.ums.ac.id/icollit/article/view/6058

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become a powerful tool in supporting English language learning, especially in writing. One of the emerging AI-based writing platforms is Lingua Aps, which utilizes natural language processing to assess and provide feedback on learners’ written texts. The system provides scoring features available in Lingua Aps, offering insights on vocabulary, grammar, coherence, and structure in real time. This study employed a qualitative case study approach involving 11th-grade students from a science-based Islamic high school in Central Java, Indonesia. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, classroom observations, and document analysis of students' feedback history in the app. Thematic analysis revealed that consistent use of Lingua Aps encouraged students to write more confidently and accurately. The app helped enhance their grammatical awareness and vocabulary development. However, challenges such as varying levels of digital literacy and the need for curriculum alignment were also noted. While the tool supports autonomy in writing, excessive reliance without proper scaffolding may hinder critical thinking development. This study recommends integrating AI-powered writing tools like Lingua Aps with pedagogical strategies to optimize student learning outcomes.
Isnaeni SofianaAmbar Sari

https://proceedings.ums.ac.id/icollit/article/view/6062

This research presents novelty by exploring in depth the construction of images in the poem "Sihir Hujan" by Sapardi Djoko Damono through a stylistic approach, especially the analysis of images according to Abrams' classification. In contrast to previous studies that tend to highlight the thematic aspects, diction, or structure of Sapardi's poetry in general, this study specifically fills a gap in Indonesian stylistic research by analyzing how visual, auditory, tactile, kinesthetic, and organic imagery is used strategically to build atmosphere and convey emotions implicitly. This study has never been conducted before comprehensively on the poem "Sihir Hujan". The results of the analysis show the dominance of visual and auditory imagery, which not only reinforces the imaginative power of poetry, but also reveals the poet's layers of meaning and emotional intensity. This study confirms that Sapardi Djoko Damono designs imagery as the main aesthetic element in conveying subjective experiences, not just as stylistic ornaments. These findings contribute to the study of stylistics in modern Indonesian poetry, especially in understanding the aesthetic workings of Sapardi's poetry, which has not been explored extensively from an imagery perspective comprehensively.
Nurul Imam BukhoriAli Imron Al Maruf

https://proceedings.ums.ac.id/icollit/article/view/6064

This study explores the representation of the female body as a site of resistance against patriarchal domination in Jangan Main-main (dengan Kelaminmu), a short story collection by Djenar Maesa Ayu. The main issue addressed is how women's bodies, sexuality, and identities are constructed and contested within the narrative of contemporary Indonesian literature. The aim of this research is to reveal how the author employs bodily experience and language as subversive tools to challenge the social structures that oppress women. This study adopts a feminist literary approach using qualitative textual analysis. Theoretical frameworks include Simone de Beauvoir's concept of "woman as the Other," Hélène Cixous's écriture féminine, and body studies in literary discourse. The findings show that Djenar Maesa Ayu's works deliberately position the female body as an active subject that rejects hegemonic norms. The narratives illustrate a process of deconstructing social taboos, sexual repression, and moral control imposed on the female body. These findings affirm that Djenar's literature is not merely an aesthetic expression, but also a powerful ideological statement on women's freedom, autonomy, and agency in contemporary urban society.
Gallant Karunia AssidikAli Imron Al MarufDwi Atmoko

This study aims to identify and analyze errors in the phonological aspect of writing loan words contained in Detik.com digital news. The method used in this study is descriptive qualitative, with observation and recording techniques to collect data in the form of loan words that do not comply with the rules of Indonesian phonology. Data were analyzed based on the General Guidelines for Indonesian Spelling (PUEBI) with a content analysis approach. The results of the study indicate that the most dominant phonological errors are the preservation of the original spelling form, the absence of phoneme adaptation, and the use of mixed languages without adjustment. Words such as replay, VAR, efakasi, and Premier League were found to be used without following the rules of sound adaptation in Indonesian. Factors causing errors include the dominance of foreign terms in public discourse, journalists' lack of understanding of language rules, and the pressure of news production that puts the editing process second. https://proceedings.ums.ac.id/icollit/article/view/6066

The shift of regional languages is one of the serious threats to the sustainability of cultural heritage in the era of globalization. This phenomenon occurs due to the dominance of Indonesian and foreign languages in various aspects of life, such as education, mass media, and social interaction. This article aims to determine the importance of preserving regional languages through the development of school curriculum. The method used is a descriptive qualitative approach with a literature study method. Data sources are obtained from various literature such as scientific journals, online articles, and previous research results that are relevant to the theme. Data collection techniques are carried out by reading and recording. The results of the study show that language shift not only weakens the function of regional languages as a means of communication, but also has the potential to eliminate the cultural identity of the community. Therefore, preservation efforts involving various parties are so that regional languages remain alive and develop along with the progress of the times through the development of school curricula. The presence of regional language learning materials is very important and has a strategic role in preserving regional culture and languages. Regional language subjects are given to students from elementary school, junior high school, to high school. This shows that educators have introduced material on regional languages from an early age. So, this certainly has a positive impact on preserving regional languages so that they do not become extinct.
Muhamad Arif PuwantoroAdyana Sunanda

https://proceedings.ums.ac.id/icollit/article/view/6076

This study aims to examine the strategy of material development in Indonesian textbooks that contribute to improving the creative thinking ability and learning independence of high school students. The approach used in this study is qualitative. Data were obtained from the Indonesian high school textbook for class X of the Independent Curriculum which was analyzed based on indicators of creative thinking, namely originality, flexibility, elaboration, and fluency, as well as indicators of learning independence, namely initiative, responsibility, and self-regulation. The results of the study show that most of the material in the book has accommodated aspects of creative thinking through open-ended tasks, problemsolving, and the development of personal ideas. However, the aspect of learning independence still tends to be limited to mastering content without deep reflective exploration. Effective material development strategies include the preparation of project-based activities, the integration of students' cultural contexts, and the presentation of triggering questions that demand independent exploration of ideas. The implications of this study show the need to design more transformative and reflective subject matter so that textbooks can play a role as a vehicle for the formation of students' character and thinking power in a sustainable manner.
Miftakhul Huda

https://proceedings.ums.ac.id/icollit/article/view/6080

This research is motivated by the increasing cases of sexual violence experienced by women in various parts of the world, which may be due to the fact that in the last few decades sexual violence has become a pressing global issue. The purpose of the study is to compare the in depth depiction of the autonomy of freedom through the existence of women in Indonesian writers, and Egyptian writers. The data are in the form of words, sentences, and paragraphs in both novel's. The data sources in the study are the novel Satin Merah by Brahmanto Anindito and Rie Yanti and the novel Wanasitu Anni Imra'ah "Aku Lupa bahwa Aku Perempuan" translated by Syahid Widi Nugroho. The data collection technique uses the Listen, Note, and Focused Group Discussion techniques. The novel was read carefully, parts containing the existence of women were identified, tabulated, and coded. The data validation used was the triangulation method. The analysis techniques in the study are heuristic and hermeneutic techniques. The results; The novel's Satin Merah and Wannasitu Anni Imra'ah found the classification of existentialist feminism, namely the body as a situation, the body as a power of perception, the body as an obstacle. Both novel's have similarities in describing the existence of women's existence as a result of social pressure that limits women's freedom. The difference lies in the different focus, the novel Satin Merah on the sexual side while the Wanasitu Anni Imra'ah novel is the role of culture on women's existence.
Olivia Septiana Setyo WijayantiAidah MustikaraniMain Sufanti

https://proceedings.ums.ac.id/icollit/article/view/6081

This study aims to examine the errors made by vocational high school students in the use of capital letters and punctuation in narrative texts, and to analyze the implications of these errors on students' overall writing skills. This study used a descriptive method with a qualitative approach to classify the types of errors and analyze their impacts. The errors found were categorized into two main aspects: the use of capital letters that are not in accordance with the rules, and the use of inappropriate punctuation, including in the placement of commas, periods, and errors in writing italics. The analysis was conducted using the orthographic matching method by observing the text to identify errors in the use of capital letters and punctuation according to PUEBI rules. The stages of data analysis include identifying errors, grouping errors, interpreting the causes of errors, and presenting the results in the form of structured descriptive descriptions. The results showed that most students made errors in the use of capital letters in proper names and at the beginning of sentences, as well as errors in the use of punctuation that affected the fluency and clarity of narrative texts and the use of inappropriate italics. The implications of these errors indicate that students' writing skills, especially in terms of sentence structure and understanding of language rules, can be disrupted, which has an impact on the overall quality of writing. This study provides an overview of the importance of understanding the use of capital letters and punctuation in improving the writing skills of vocational high school students.
Dini Nur AzizahNindy Muji UtamiM Markhamah

https://proceedings.ums.ac.id/icollit/article/view/6085

This articel the use of topicalization as a linguistic strategy in the 2024 Indonesian election campaign banners. Employing Fairclough's Critical Discourse Analysis approach, the research analyzes how political actors structure their slogans by foregrounding certain elements to construct ideological narratives and project political identity. Based on 20 banners documented across Surakarta, the findings are classified into nine topicalization strategies: (1) ideal values and visionary leadership, (2) populist and people-oriented imagery, (3) discourse of change and improvement, (4) nationalism and collective action, (5) social identity and local representation, (6) gender mainstreaming and women's representation, (7) ethical and moral political discourse, (8) emotional and popular language, and (9) affiliation with political figures or parties as legitimacy claims. These strategies indicate that topicalization serves not only as a syntactic technique but also as a powerful rhetorical tool in shaping political communication. The study concludes that topicalization in visual campaign media is central to building persuasive political imagery. Future studies are encouraged to explore multimodal elements and audience reception to gain a deeper understanding of political discourse.
Mellyonisa Athariq SamsulhadiAtiqa SabardilaM Markhamah

https://proceedings.ums.ac.id/icollit/article/view/6087

Mastery of spelling, including the use of punctuation and capital letters, is a crucial aspect of students' writing skills. This study aims to identify and analyze the types of errors in the use of punctuation and letters found in students' writings on wall magazines within the Madrasah Tsanawiyah environment. This phenomenon is significant because internal school media such as wall magazines reflect students' ability to apply linguistic rules, particularly spelling conventions involving the use of capital letters and punctuation. This research employs a descriptive qualitative approach with data collected through reading and note-taking techniques. The findings show that the most common errors include the misuse of commas, colons, quotation marks, capital letters, as well as other punctuation marks such as exclamation points and slashes. The main causes of these errors are students' limited understanding of spelling rules and the lack of consistent practice and guidance in writing activities. This study highlights the need for more contextual, practical, and intensive instructional strategies in teaching the Indonesian language at the elementary and secondary school levels. Furthermore, the findings contribute to applied linguistics in the field of language error analysis and can serve as a reference for curriculum development and more effective language teaching methods.
Jlitheng Nano PamilihUlfah Nur MuflikhahIsna Dini RahmawatiM Markhamah
